During the 2011-12 La Liga season, Lionel Messi (Argentina) scored 50 goals for Barcelona from 37 games. His nearest rival was Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) who scored 46 goals for Real Madrid from 38 games. Ronaldo's total is the second highest total ever scored in a La Liga season. In all competitions in 2011-12, Messi scored 73 goals for Barcelona. He scored 14 in the Champions League; 3 in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup); 3 in the Supercopa (Spanish Super Cup); 1 in the Uefa Super Cup; and 2 in the Fifa Club World Cup. Despite Messi's 50 goals, Barcelona did not win the Spanish league. Real Madrid won the title. Messi was awarded the Pichichi Trophy by newspaper Marca for the top scorer in the Spanish league. Ronaldo previously held the record for most La Liga goals in a season with 40 goals in 2010-11.
