As of 26 March 2019, the best-selling first-person shooter videogame is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve, 2012) with 40 million units shipped, according to VGChartz.com.
The Counter-Strike series began life as a mod for Half-Life (Valve, 1998) designed by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe in 1999. Le and Cliffe were then hired by Valve and the intellectual property rights acquired, and in 2000 Valve released the first game as a standalone game on Microsoft Windows on 09 November, 2000. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the fourth and latest game in the series, and has been released on Windows, Linux, OS X, PS3 and Xbox 360. Since December 2018, the game has run on a free-to-play model, with revenue being generated purely from cosmetic in-game purchases.
