While the follow-up released in 2013 was technically more advanced, gamers continue to cite Battlefield 3 (2011) as the true masterpiece from Swedish development studio DICE. This authentic, heavily team-oriented military FPS bagged more than 60 accolades from critics when it was first revealed. In June 2011, it premiered at E3, where awards included Best of Show, Best Graphics and Best Multiplayer. Later in 2011, Battlefield 3 collected Best of Show at Gamescom (Germany) and Future Game during the Tokyo Game Show (Japan).

This record is an indication of how first-person-shooters have become the most commonplace and best-selling genre of videogames in the past decade. Consequently, the average age of players is now higher.
